Finch Dispute Resolution, a law firm representing the foundation Frisse Wind (Fresh Wind), is preparing a class action against Tata Steel.
Finch said that during a meeting held on 23 November 2023, it became evident that Tata Steel was unwilling to accept responsibility for the harm caused by its operations in The Netherlands. Subsequently, further scientific studies have emerged, corroborating that Tata Steel’s activities cause significant damage to the local community.
On 16 December, the Fresh Wind Foundation again urged Tata Steel to engage in discussions to address the harm experienced and anticipated by residents. Should Tata Steel fail to respond to this appeal or continue to evade its responsibilities, the foundation will start a collective action.
According to the foundation, Tata Steel releases various highly toxic substances, the dangers of which have been widely acknowledged. This situation poses serious health risks to residents, including an elevated likelihood of lung cancer, acute respiratory issues, asthma, reduced life expectancy, and neurological impairments. Despite the known consequences, Tata Steel continues to subject residents to hazardous substances.
Furthermore, the company contributes to disturbances by emitting noise, odours, smoke, and gases. This situation results in significant disruptions and noise pollution, heightening the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Hazardous materials such as lead also contaminate properties, including gardens.
The foundation said in a statement that Tata Steel bears a social responsibility and must act to eliminate harmful emissions while providing compensation for the damage inflicted on residents’ health and property.
